Just in time for the new school year comes this must-have for the hipster Christians looking for the perfect thing to replace their fading “Jesus is my homeboy” t-shirt. You know, a fashion statement that says “I take my faith seriously, or maybe I’m just being ironic.”

Detroit is notorious for being depressed, run-down, and generally miserable. Though those labels may sometimes be unfair to the nicer parts of the city (yes, there are some nice-ish parts of the D), they apply pretty well to these 10 small churches.

As you’ve likely noticed, we really like Oswald Chambers’ My Utmost For His Highest. You may or may not read any more of it than the single-line excerpts we post here (you might not even read those), but we’d especially like you to take the time to soak in today’s reading.
The issue at hand is something that I’ve been dealing with personally, especially in the past few months.
When we look at these words of Jesus, we immediately find them to be the most revolutionary that human ears have ever heard. “…seek first the kingdom of God…” (Matthew 6:33). Even the most spiritually-minded of us argue the exact opposite, saying, “But I must live; I must make a certain amount of money; I must be clothed; I must be fed.” The great concern of our lives is not the kingdom of God but how we are going to take care of ourselves to live. Jesus reversed the order by telling us to get the right relationship with God first, maintaining it as the primary concern of our lives, and never to place our concern on taking care of the other things of life.
Times are tough. That’s a nice way of saying that money sucks right now. Obviously, we still have a higher standard of living than many other people in the world, but that’s not to say we all have it easy. Some of us are stressed out by trying to keep the bill collectors off our backs, but some aren’t even sure where their next meal is coming from. This church is doing their best to help, by whatever means necessary.
One of our favorite blogs is Everything Is Terrible. Why? Because they’re constantly critical of Christians. Let’s face it, Christians often get a bad rap for being pushy, preachy, insincere, and just plain cheesy.
